“You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.” – Morpheus in The Matrix
Many of my friends and blog readers ask me all the time, “I love your blog Bueller but I don’t have any diseases or I’m not sick or I am sick but not with what you had or I’m a guy what does this have to do with me?…… How is all this information going to help me? What do I do?” Now, I am not a doctor and I can’t advise anyone what to do or how to treat different illnesses but I do think that there is a basic game plan I would undertake to educate myself no matter what I was faced with. That’s what I plan to outline here. They often ask me, “Bueller, if you were me, what would you do? “There are certain basics that apply to all levels of health whether it’s perfect health or sickness. I don’t believe our education ever stops. You are never finished with your education. We should always be learning, growing and pushing our boundaries. Can’t give up coffee? Why not? Maybe you can’t today by why is not possible to quit tomorrow? Why not find an alternative to take it’s place? Why not learn how you can? Why not just research it for fun? Relieve yourself of the pressure to do it but explore the option. Then, maybe, it will become more possible to do! That to me is life. Is it not? Life is possibility.
“Live as if your were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” – Gandhi
People are a lot like cars and food is a lot like gasoline. There are many different kinds of cars, old ones, new ones, trucks, mini coopers, hybrids and there are many kinds of gasoline. The great thing about being a person and not a car is that it is possible to upgrade a car by choosing premium gas. Meaning, it is possible to go from being a beat up old Honda to a brand new Lexus hybrid just by choosing different fuel. Unlike a car that would have to be traded in, it is possible to work with what is already there and actually change it into what is desired.
So, what would I do if I were diagnosed with a sickness (cancer, autoimmune disease, the flu, a cold, arthritis, psoriasis, eczema, diabetes, infertility, etc.) or simply desirous of a better more healthy life? Well we already know the answer to the cancer and autoimmune question as I’ve outline exactly what I did in my Girl’s Corner. Talking in a more general context though, the first thing I would do would be talk to a doctor if I were sick of course and then I’d see what shape my car was in:
I would need to know what I was dealing with. I would check under the hood and see just what kind of premium fuel we were talking about. What would we need to get this thing running? I’d do this by ordering pH strips and assessing my acid/alkaline balance. This would be my starting point. The acid /alkaline balance can be off even in what appears to be perfect health. Just like a used car that looks great but turns out to be a lemon. Why is the acid /alkaline balance important? It is like the oil in the car, it is the key to everything running smoothly. It is the key to all health, I believe. If it is out of whack the body can overheat, corrode, rust, stall, etc. :
“When the body is acidic, yeast, bacteria, viruses and cancer can thrive. And conversely, when the body is alkaline, foreign bacteria, viruses, yeast and cancer can not live.” -Jeff Wend
Instead of guessing what is going on with my body why not know? Is it not worth $4 to find out? That’s how much a pack of pH stix cost! It’s cheaper than a gallon of gas! I wouldn’t drive away in a car without first knowing what kind of shape it’s in, would I? It’d be pretty hard to get anywhere if I did. I might be able to go for awhile, fooled into thinking it’s in top notch shape, but that risks stalling unexpectedly on a highway somewhere, stranded, alone and too late for getting help. Nobody wants that to happen, right? So first things first, I’d find out where my body is at because I want this to be a long trip!! If I was really acidic (most people are and don’t know they are because doctors don’t generally believe in this) I’d work on alkalizing my body (see Bueller’s Diet). I am not going to explain about acid/alkaline balance here because if you Google it or read the books I’ve suggested you will find far better explanations and information than I could ever give.
Once my pH is assessed, then I would figure out where I wanted to go. I’d also simultaneously figure out where I ultimately wanted to go. What was my destination? Where do I want to get to? Reverse a condition? Speed through recovery? U turn back to healthy? I’d take the information I had gathered (my doctors diagnosis, my own diagnosis, my hypothesis, my mom’s hypothesis, my goals, my families goals, etc.). I’d take it all at first with a grain of salt and a pound of research. I would research everything and read everything I could find on the subject, “my destination”. I’d explore different neighborhoods as well as explore ones I was scared to go into. I would read things I didn’t believe were right and things I thought were ridiculous, because from that we learn. I would read polar opposite information. For example, if I had low hormone levels I would read about high hormone levels as well, as they are a more common problem. After all, if they can lower hormones couldn’t I reverse what they’re saying to raise them? Think outside the box. Drive around for awhile and see what neighborhoods are appealing and walk around the ones that scare the hell out of you so they become safe. Read raw vegan blogs, regular blogs, alternative medicine blogs, online forums, etc. I’d think of different search words if I wasn’t getting the results from Google that I wanted such as reverse, cure, heal, change, alternate, alternative, vegan, raw, herbal, holistic, new, analysis, preferential, option, optional, loophole, variant, etc. Reformulate your questions to find forums online by using words like “my” results are “blank”, “my” diagnosis is “blank”, “my” numbers are “blank” what do these results mean, etc. These will most likely show forums results as they are pronoun specific and will only show people’s specific experiences instead of factual references.
Research, Research, Research!!
re*search
Pronunciation: \ri-ˈsərch, ˈrē-ˌ\
- Function: noun
1: careful or diligent search
2: studious inquiry or examination; especially : investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised theories or laws3: the collecting of information about a particular subject
I can’t say it enough. Read, learn, ask questions! Act like a 4 year old and ask why about everything? Ask obvious questions. I would not judge myself of think of myself as stupid for asking them. I’d embrace the learning process and my own journey. Ask specific, educated, pointed, researched, questions. I’d read an entire blog or posts before asking what someone did. I’d be specific and pointed! If I were lost or needed direction I wouldn’t stop at a gas station and ask the clerk how he got to work that day, would I?. No, I’d ask him how to get to where I wanted to go! Conversely, he wouldn’t get in the car and take me there, he’d give me directions and suggestions on how to get there. Then he’d bid me farewell. It would be up to me to navigate my own way just as it is up to me to navigate my health. My doctor is not my chauffeur he is simply my mechanic. He can’t stop my car from breaking down and ending up in the shop because I put the wrong fuel in it but he can fix it up when it’s there and send me on my way. That is how I would think of my doctors. They are not accountable for my health. I am.
The books, CD’s and DVD’s that would become my Google maps would be:
(most of these are available on CD if you would rather listen in the car and since I work 60 hour weeks and am in the car over an hour a day, I love doing this)

I would put only premium gasoline in my car. I would treat my car as a Lexus until it became a Lexus. I would form my own diet from what I found. I would discuss it with my doctor and if I didn’t like their answer I would talk to more doctors. If I was acidic I’d adopt a similar diet to Bueller’s Diet which is low in sugar and high in alkalizing greens. I would eat premium fuel whether my doctors believed in it or not WHILE doing what they say as well. I would always keep an open mind to everything while being rooted in my goals. I would ask why about everything. Why do I have to do that now? Why won’t it go away? Why can’t I try this? I’d piece the information together and make my own plan. My doctors would be my GPS but I would be in charge of where I was going. I would plug in the destination. This would be my journey.
What would Bueller do? Bueller would take the red pill!

What a wonderful post. I always read your blog regardless of if I’m afflicted with what you are or coming down with something someone else has. I always enjoy reading the Conversations with Father-To-Be (I believe that’s what it is called…) and I’m not pregnant, nor will I be anytime soon. I think anyone can take away wonderful things from your blog, no matter who they are.

This post is so right on and absolutely what I needed to hear. My biggest struggle is with trying to deal with other people’s perceptions/questions/quizzical looks/rejection of what I am doing and what I am learning and why. I cannot tell you how many times I have had the notion of eating better to improve my health dismissed.
Reminders that I am on this journey for ME, for MY health are wonderful. It reminds me that I am creating the path that I’m walking, my reasons for doing it and why the responses from other people is just their ego (thanks eckhart) talking and that it’s ok to be challenged and that the challenge helps me solidify my belief in what I am doing.
I do have to say that I am very luck to have a partner who is very supportive of me and whatever I choose to do, he wants me to feel vibrant, healthy and happy.
B, you rock!

Very very interesting and inspiring.
Makes me realize this is such an obvious underlying issue to any health problem that is rarely if ever covered with doctors. Especially mine.
Never knew anything about Alkaline levels and plan to research it as much as I can.
I actually feel like I CAN do something about it on my own now!
Thanks for the push out of the nest.
