Mercury Girl: Part 4: My Heavy Metal Detox Plan

October 13th, 2008 · 81 Comments

I start my heavy metal detox today also known as chelation. I will be using DMSA (Captomer). This program prescribed by my doctor will rotate on a schedule of 5 days on Captomer and 9 days off Captomer. This is so I am always starting on a Monday (or whatever day I choose as it’s a 2 week interval schedule). Captomer strips the body of minerals as it binds to the mercury because it also binds to minerals so the 9 days off are to replenish my minerals with supplements. This is vital as I don’t want to get even more depleted than I already am by the mercury. It is also advisable but not mandated to get a colonic on day 3,4 or 5 of the Captomer week as most of the mercury leaves the body by waste product and most people don’t get rid of their waste efficiently enough risking re-absorption of the mercury. I am supposed to drink more than 8 ounces of water a day to help flush out my system. I’ve read 80% of the mercury in your body is in your kidneys. I don’t know if that’s true or not.

Here is the schedule I will follow:

Monday-Friday (On days – 5 Days total)

3 capsules of Captomer by Thorne Research in the morning for 5 days

2 capsules in the evening

On day 3,4,or5 of the Captomer I will get a colonic. It really helps the body detox faster and more safely.

Sat- The Following Sunday (Off days – 9 Days total)

1 capsule of Heavy Metal Support by Thorne Research in the morning and evening for 9 days

2 capsules of Basic Detox Nutrients in the morning and evening.

Then I do the Captomer for 5 days starting that Monday….and on and on on……

I will repeat this cycle for 8 months to a year depending how long it takes.

I am also on many other supplements to keep my adrenals and liver strong for detox.

I will look for reactions like feeling foggy brain, nauseous, tired, weak, flu like, etc. As these are all signs that the mercury is coming out too quickly. If this happens I am to take a few days off of the Captomer and call my doctor to start a lower dose.

I’ve read a lot about natural methods of detox as well as other methods like Zeolite. I think it is absolutely crucial to work with a physician because if mercury is mobilized in the body without a clear exit route of the body it can be very dangerous as it can settle elsewhere in the body like in the joints, the brain, the heart, etc. So it was my choice to avoid any of those.

I will try and keep a daily or weekly journal of what I’m feeling as I go through this.

For more on my mercury research this directory page will always be at the top of my blog:
Following are links to my posts that chronicle my research on mercury and heavy metal toxicity and my journey to recover from mercury poisoning. I will updating, adding to, and changing these as I continue to research and learn.

It will be fascinating to follow your progression with this, Bueller.

I'm interested in knowing what your thoughts were/are about zeolites, since I'm sure you did a lot of reading/research about them while finding the best method for your heavy metal detox plan.

    Lots of love to you,

    Wendi

This is so informative. Thanks for posting your journey!

Out of curiosity, how did you get tested for candida & heavy metals? I have many of the same exact symptoms as you and I'd realy like to get to the bottom of some of these health problems!

    Thanks in advance,
    K.

    Hi Wendi:
Zeolite just mobilizes the mercury it doesn't help get it out of your body. That's really dangerous because than it can settle elsewhere in the body. It is also important the often severe mineral depletion because of heavy metals.

Detoxing with amalgams in your mouth is a bad idea in my opinion. I don't really agree with your detox protocol, but I hope everything goes all right for you.

I am also currently detoxing for mercury poisoning.

Hi – I am curently chelating too after 10 years of yeast/candida/allergies. I am going 3 days on (2 caps 3 times a day) and 11 days off. Just finihsed my 3rd session of this. So far so good. Its going to take 4 months apparently. Not sure if this is because my levels are possibly not as high as yours. In any case keep posting and let us know how it goes.

I am also not sure you should be doing this with amalgams in your mouth. Best of luck.

If I were you, I would buy Dr. Cutler's book Amalgam Ilness: Diagnosis and Treatment. I think what you are doing could cause permanent damage. The doctor who has you chelating with amalgams in your mouth is out of his mind. He obviously has never tried his own detox protocol because he'd go crazy. You are pulling mercury from the fillings into your body causing more exposure! When you remove the source only then you can start to truly detox this toxic metal. Once you read Dr. Cutler's book you realize why all the other detox protocols are a joke.

4 hours after you take DMSA, the levels of DMSA drop and you begin to redistribute mercury to the various places of your body. Let's say you have a headache and want to take some medicine. When you look on a Tylenol bottle it says to take 2 pills every 4 hours. Why 4 hours? That is because after 4 hours the medicine starts to drop and the headache will come back. Now put this into context of mercury detox and you can see the potentially dangerous consequences. When you take a pill every other day or 3 times a day, you are constantly in redistribution mode. You probably aren't even excreting much mercury. Now if you take DMSA every 4 hours to completely eliminate the risk of mercury redistribution, your body continuously excretes mercury as long as you are urinating. But DMSA isn't strong enough to chelate the brain, so you have to add something else into the mix once body mercury has been lowered.

I take 25mg of DMSA every 3 hours including during the night. 4 days on 4 days off. My body begins to redistribute mercury in 3 hours, so that is why I take it that often.

Dr. Cutler is the reason I got my amalgams out. and I do believe he is right about his detoxing. There are a couple other things that could help too. Alpha lipolic acid chelates mercury as well but you have the same problem that you have with the dmsa which is it only has a life of 3-4 hours. One other thing ALA does is cross the blood brain barrier. so it is important that you take the ALA every 3 hrs morning noon and night. The next best thing or maybe a better thing to do besides chelation is this. raise your own levels of glutathione in your body. glutathione is a master antioxidant, and is responsible for naturally getting rid of mercury. those who have CFS usually are low in glutathione and can't produce their own. You can do a couple things. one is get methyl B12 injections on a daily basis (like the autistic kids do), then anther thing you can do is supplement with non-denatured whey protien. bodybuilding.com is the cheapest place to find that stuff. Whey protien also creates glutathione in large amounts. then I just got done studying supplementing with selenium and vitamin E which I actually got off of an ad on this blog. apparently if you have had lots of mercury and had a health crisis you are very low in selenium. well without selenium you cant make glutathione. what probably happens in our bodies is we deplete our selenium because the body is trying to make so much glutathione, and now that it doesn't have the selenium it can't make any more glutathione so we can't ever naturally rid ourselves of mercury.
hope this helps again I love your blog you are awesome for spreading the news.

    Bueller,

Are you seeing a Naturopath or a MD???? The reason why I ask, is beacuse ever since I was diagnosed with HPV, I have been super proactive with my health and conistions. I question everything, and my doctors sometimes think I am out of my mind.

I am wondering if I ask them to give me a Mercury Poisoning test, if they will just think it's me being paranoid again.

I have suffered from chronuc yeast infections as well (with plenty of discharge)…sorry for all the yucky details.

    Hi Bueller,

Thanks for the extensive information you have provided. I have a question though.

The doctor that tested you for the Mercury Poison, is your Dr. and ND or a MD???
The reason why I ask is because I have never had any of my doctors check me for this. I have CIN 1 / Mild Dysplasia due to High Risk HPV.

I am trying to be proactive with my health, but unfortunately, my Dr. thinks I am more paranoid than anything when I ask her questions.

Could you let me know who you Doctor is?

    Bueller,

Is your Doctor a ND or a MD??? The reason why I ask is because I am wondering if my MD would do this. Lately my Dr's think I am a but nutty because I ask so many questions after my HPV diagnosis. I consider myself curious and proactive with my health.

Thanks for all the info, and I look forward to hearing from you

Hi! Thanks for stopping by. Most of my doctors are listed above and they are all MD's. The only thing I can say is if your doctors think you are nutty than you need a new doctor.

i just recently found your blog and am loving all this stuff as i also have been studying on this for years……..have you done this protocol yet?

  • 77 Matthew Alan Taylor // Oct 23, 2009 at 2:14 pm

    Yo Bueller,

My N.D. gave me the same urine toxic metals test you got (from Doctor's Data), showing elevated levels of Lead, Mercury, and Aluminum. After a protocol involving Captomer, and then another with Metal Magnet, I have not made as much progress as I'd like, so I've asked her for a stronger intervention, and she's recommended EDTA IV Chelation therapy. What do you think about that? How's your protocol going? Have you been re-tested yet?

I am in the middle of it. My numbers are almost all the way down.

I don't know anything about EDTA IV except that it can really run you down. This takes a long time. Patience is good. I know that much. It's taken me a year. I am down to 10 and hope to be finished soon. I was at 40.

Actually this couldn't be further from the truth. Zeolites are one of the few materials, if not the only thing, that is capable of safely removing mercury from the body. I did it very quickly and with no side effects. My brain cleared within a few days, my skin cleared up within a few months and my energy and sleep improved within days too. My mercury was so far off the chart that the chelation doc wouldn't treat me. I passed the mercury onto my daughter and she had daily migraines and kidney damage. All gone. We had our guts in order though before we did the zeolite. If not, I'm sure it would have taken a bit longer.
