Bueller’s Healing Diet

thesurfer2I am a Organic Natural Foodist that I call Farm Fresh Living – which means I eat mostly raw vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and occasionally small fish and organic grass fed meats with a focus on maintaining a healthy acid/alkaline balance as well as organic produce whenever possible. I would say it’s as close to living on a farm as possible. I would consider incorporating small portions of raw dairy, organic farm fresh eggs and cheese but I am allergic so I don’t.  I would never support regular dairy (read The China Study).

My main belief above all else is that a body in balance (meaning a balanced pH) is a healthy body. That is why so many different diets work for so many different people. What makes it so confusing is that it is rarely addressed. pH pH pH pH!! Once I learned about the acid/alkaline balance I found the healthy me! The knowledge of pH balance, how it works, and how what I eat affects MY body, is the key. I only know this to be true for me because I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

When I don’t feel good or feel “cruddy” as my friends say my pH is acidic and in the 5′s or 6′s. On days like that I work on eating only the most alkalizing meals and drink lots of lemon water. If it’s really bad I drink at least 32 oz of fresh green juice (kale, celery, cucumber, collards, parsley, lemon) and Shamrock Soup (raw garlic cucumber watercress soup). If I’m coming down with a cold or have mucus build up I drink a quart of orange juice with 2 lemons in it in an half an hour to restore my body’s balance. It works every time. Usually within 24 hours my pH is back up to 7 and I feel better. Unlike other advice and other things doctors have told me to do what I like about this method is I can see firsthand if it’s working. I can actually monitor my health like one would their temperature. I do this by using pH strips. I have not been sick in over 18 months, I’ve reversed cervical dysplasia and candida as well as got rid of high risk HPV that causes cervical cancer or at least enabled my body to put it into submission. As far as I’m concerned this is all the proof I need.

In a nutshell I avoid almost all carbs, dairy (except for very small portions of butter and yogurt), eggs, ALL sugar, refined flour (I do use gluten free flour), wheat and grain (except from brown rice and quinoa).

The foods in italics in the “what I don’t eat” section only pertains to a healing diet, after that I do incorporate them in my regular diet once my body can tolerate them again and there is no excess candida to feed off of them. My diet will most likely be different from some out there as I’ve had to piece together what works for me. I am well aware of all the books and all the proposed diets that have different information. This is the diet I made with the information I felt worked for MY body. I can not advise you or tell you what will work for you. Everyone and every BODY is different, functions very differently and reacts very differently to things.

I eat fish at least once a week and up to 3 times a week. Always small fish like wild caught i.e. Brisling sardines, trout, salmon, oysters, crab, etc. I love pancakes and still eat them but I don’t eat them anymore the way I used to but I have some great recipes on my blog for healthy nutritious pancakes that I now prefer. There is also a good recipe on my blog I used when transitioning. It has no refined white flours or sugar. They are amazing.

The diets I follow most closely are that of John Tobe and Natatlie Rose (as they are both alkaline raw vegan pescatarians and follow the same principles- with an infusion of Donna Gates and Christopher Vasey – as they are experts in the acid/alkaline balance and the pH of the body) and Brandan Brazier’s The Thrive Diet.

This is my journal of what has worked for me and nothing more. I can not legally advise you on your diet all I can do is share what I have done and hope it will help you on your journey. I’m always open to questions about what you should read or if I know of somewhere to find information however I can not tell you what you should eat. That is something only you can decide and that you should discuss with a medical practitioner. I wish you only the best health and happiness!

*As a reminder, always consult your doctor for medical advice and treatment before starting any program.

WHAT I DO EAT:
Anything and Everything Green!

Vegetables (as many green ones as possible favoring the most alkalizing – I ate a lot of asparagus – I mean a lot, spinach, watercress and cucumbers)

Some Fruit (granny smith apples, avocados, bell peppers, grapefruit, oranges, lemons and limes, frozen peaches in smoothies – can’t seem to tolerate fresh ones)

Very small portions of organic grass fed meat (Bison, Wild Boar, Chicken – only organic free range grass fed)

Fish ((due to heavy metals as stated above I eat small wild caught fish because the small ones have less time to accumulate heavy metals – they’re still toxic but I love them – this is a personal choice) small and wild caught – Salmon, Brisling Sardines, Trout, Crab, Oysters, Herring

Nuts (avoided all nuts for the first 6 months of diet – almonds in small doses are fine though supposedly)

Nut Milks (almond milk is neutral and doesn’t count as a nut so I drink that all the time)

Hemp Milk (made from fresh hemp seeds)

Oils (almond, avocado, olive, hemp and coconut)

Flours (only gluten free ones/buckwheat/amaranth/almond/coconut/quinoa  – never refined white flour or refined wheat flour) I allowed myself one carb a day made from these flours. No more. (i.e. one scone, one piece of bread)

Salt (only celtic sea salt or himaylan salt / they are great fro restoring mineral balance)

Seeds (chia seeds and hemp seeds – both are high in omega 3′s and hemp is high in protein/after 3 months I started occasionally adding sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds/ 6 months all seeds – sesame seeds can aggravate candida which means no tahini)

Sweeteners (only stevia or xylitol syrup (on occasion) / no agave, no sugar of any kind, no raw cane sugar, no evaporated cane juice,  no honey, no maple syrup)

Tamari Soy Sauce (they have one that is wheat and gluten free)

Apple Cider Vinegar (this is very controversial, for the most part I occasionally used it on salads but who really needs it when you can use lemon juice and olive oil / Donna Gates does talk about using it to restore your stomach Acid so if that is a concern it was interesting to read)

Mushrooms (only shitake and maitake, no button mushrooms)

Red Potatoes (on red ones)

Grass Fed Raw Organic Butter (cultured with good bacteria)

Lots of tea of all kinds.

WHAT I DON’T EAT:

(items in italics will be re-introduced in limited portions after healing period and when the body can tolerate them):

Alcohol (will eventually have red wine and champagne in limited servings for special occasions)

Coffee (only on weekends)

No carbs of any kind (no bread, cookies, cake, etc. with the exception of 1 treat made from gluten free – sugar free – flour, from above that you made yourself)

Dairy (including all dairy products such as cheese, kefir, yogurt, milk, etc./ I happen to be allergic / I seem to tolerate some butter and yogurt in baking)

Eggs (I’m allergic)

Fruit (everything not listed in lists above) Only after 6 months have I started adding the following (I didn’t eat any of these for the first 6 months) – bananas, mango, strawberries, rasberries, kiwi, blueberries, peaches and papaya in small doses and only one new fruit a week to see how my body reacts. Donna Gates goes as far to say you shouldn’t add fruit back for a whole year. There is a lot of information out there. I can’t say this is the right choice yet for me. I am trying some fruit now that it’s been 6 months and we will see how it goes. My doctor said it was okay to add it back as much as 3 months into the diet but I decided to wait until the 6 month mark. I also only add it in small doses and don’t have it every day. I also eat it immediately so it can’t ferment and I don’t juice it.

Big Fish (due to heavy metals) avoid Mackerel, Sea Bass, Tuna, Swordfish

Mushrooms (except for those mentioned above)

Nama Shoya (it has wheat and gluten)

Nuts (particularly sesame seeds and pistachios) avoided all nuts for the first 6 months of diet – almonds in small doses are fine though supposedly) After 6 months I added back , brazil nuts, cashews, walnuts, pine nuts, etc. I never eat peanuts as they are the most contaminated nut as well as soybeans. I don’t eat those at all and they are especially bad for candida. I always soak my nuts before I eat them and I soak them in water with a few drops of liquid grapefruit seed extract which kills any fungus that can trigger candida.

Nut Butters (almond butter – avoid for the first 3 months – I rarely eat it anyways)

Products containing wheat and or gluten

Refined flours (except those gluten free flours mentioned above)

Sugar (white sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, high fructose corn syrup, maltose, agave, including evaporated cane juice, honey, any kind of sugar, organic sugar, maple sugar and syrup, etc.)

Salt (table salt)

Sesame Oil

Soy products (except soy sauce listed above), Soymilk

Spirulina

Tahini (made from sesame seeds which trigger candida)

Tomatoes and any other shade vegetables such as Eggplant (per Donna Gates book as tomatoes are very acidic)

HELPFUL TIPS FROM NATUROPATH GARY BREWER

1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.

2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]

3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]

4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]

5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]

I am so glad I found your blog! I like your diet list…I need to tweak my fruit intake for sure. Thanks for the pointers!

  • 2 Steffi // Mar 2, 2008 at 6:09 am

Thank you for this blog! I, too, am entering the world of raw veganism, and am finding this extremely helpful and uplifting. However, I have a question about your diet.

I have read that foods like walnuts and cranberries create very acidic ash in the body, while others that you do not eat (like mushrooms and fermented tofu) are alkalising. Medicinal and shiitake mushrooms have also been shown to have strong cancer-fighting, cell-regenerative properties. (This is important to me right now, as I’m also working to reverse cell abnormalities.) How did you come to choose the foods listed above?

  • 3 admin // Mar 2, 2008 at 9:54 am

    Hi Steffi:

I don’t eat mushrooms or tofu as they are high in mold and this triggers my candida. I eat cranberries (and only recently) in small doses and walnuts, almonds and other nuts for protein and only when soaked for hours in water and grapefruit seed extract (I will add that to my diet list so people know). Some of this reasoning is from Donna Gate’s book, THE BODY ECOLOGY DIET. Small quantities don’t bother me. I can only speak for myself though and am not legally able to advise anyone. I comprised my diet from reading all the books under my book’s section and choosing what felt right to my body. Trust your gut. Do what feels right to you. I also tested my body ph with ph strips daily and that is the key I believe.

    Good luck with your transition!

my diet is very similar.. no shrooms, confused on that still. I do use raw agave and raw honey in tiny amounts. I do eat one apple and sometimes I banana per day, but I also do at least one hour of exercise per day.. eat it right after the gym.
    love you

what are the reasons why you avoid spirulina and more about why sesame affects candida?

  • 6 admin // May 16, 2008 at 8:03 pm

    Hi EJR

Both are per Donna Gates book The Body Ecology Diet. Tests show that sesame seeds make candida worse but they don’t know why (my guess is it’s because they’re so high in fat). Spirulina is an algae which is a mold which feeds yeast. According to Body Ecology it is best to avoid both if you have issues with yeast.

    Be well

hi :) I was wondering why you avoided all nuts for the first 6 months of your diet. I’m starting to suspect I might have candida, I just realized I have a lot of the symptoms… I understand that this is what works best for you and everyone should work with their body to figure things out, but if you could let me know that would be great :) thank you.
    oh.
and I’ve been lookin’ at your site for quite a while now (5 months?) and I think it’s great :)

    bueller,
why do avoid spirulina in the anti-candida diet?

  • 9 admin // Jun 30, 2008 at 9:21 am

    Hi Minu

According to Donna Gates (The Body Ecology Diet) Spriulina is an algae and hence a mold and thus feeds Candida. I have found that after the initial high it leaves me completely exhausted so I stay away from it for now.

  • 10 admin // Jun 30, 2008 at 9:24 am

    Lucy
Donna Gates also talks about avoiding all nuts except almonds. Nuts hold a tremendous amount of mold and spores which trigger Candida. If I still wanted to eat a few I read that soaking them in grapefruit seed extract works to kill it all. I would check out her book. It’s really great for eliminating Candida.

I would love a recommendation for someone who can help me with a candida diet focused on reversing cervical dysplasia. I have been attempting it myself for several months now and have just ended up confused and frustrated. I think some good guidance would be so helpful for me. Any point in the right direction you can lend would be so helpful. I love your blog and Kris’ blog and thank you both so much for your sharing yourselves.

My doctor told me I have CIN III / precancerous stage and I turned down the procedure. I knew in my gut I could cure this on my own with an Alkline diet. I talked to many people who have cured themselves and the best book I found so far is called PH Miracle by Dr. Robert Young – his first book – I’m SO HAPPY TO HAVE FOUND THIS WEB SITE and know that someone else has gone though the same thing and cured themselve! Thank you for sharing and I’ll be back to share my sucess story! Sincerely, Tammie / Start healing date 8/5/08

Is there a book or somewhere on your blog where there is a breakdown of what to eat on a daily basis….like a diet plan? I just found out I have “the best” or “closest to normal” form of HPV, but an very eager to do a whole body cleanse if that's what it takes to fight this thing. I have already bought most of the products you recommended and only have a couple more to purchase. I am dreading consuming the “green smoothies”, but my dad does it now (he overcame thyroid cancer using a raw diet), and he said the greens arent that bad once you get used to them.

Thanks so much….your blog is amazing!!!!!!!!

  • 21 bellakeppel // Jan 8, 2009 at 10:04 am

CANDIDA!!!!!!! I have battled for 2 years and it took me that long to find to Donna Gates does not know everything. I have gotten rid of it I dont know how many times. The first time was on the BED diet becasue thats all I knew about how to treat this dreadful dumb ass doctor induced disease. ( Please dont tell me its not a disease, it destroyed my health and my life) I have taken everything virtually to treat it. I have gotten rid of it eating large amounts of NUTS and nut butters adn even ocasionally Sesame seeds, which are anit-cancer, large amounts of raw chocloate I make with coconut oil and stevia. Sesame seeds feed candida becasue of the fat??? Come on!!
She wrote a book, dont let her run your life listen to your body I read every book I could find on canidida and they ALL conflict each other and it made me have several nervous breakdowns. I also found out after consulting over 15 docotors adn one nutrtionist who specializes and know more than DG in my opinion. Is that you cant rid of the candida if your body is holding on to metals adn this all started for me after some idiot gave me Flagyl for the yeast infection he induced by overdosing me on testoserone to treat the Chronic fatigue which was actually chronic mercury poisoning from my fillings, so now Im chelating with DMSA adn cholrella and take clay each night to pull out the metal and dead bugs. My doctor also prescribed blue green algae as a superfood and maitake MUSHROOMs to boost immune system. Medicinal mushrooms do not feed candida. Each day my symtpoms were better. Im going to tell you all something that will make you kiss and hug me. I discovered a God given gift an an herb none of these experts seem to know about, the first time I took it I was symptom free and after dealing with my myriad of them for months, in 2 weeks, I went off the diet for 4 months it came back this has happened a few times each time i go running to a new doc adn try thier remedy which really has done little for me including, grape seed extract, Undeleonlic acid, caprylic acid, garlic, pau arco, and so on, it is called NEEM I take 3 caps 3x a day I try everything else adn then forget about my true love Neem. I am almsot symtom free again in 4 days after eating a half a green apple last week made me cry. i just had coconut flour pancakes with Blueberries and feeling great.( I eat eggs, BTW which is not dairy is it? I never heard this, dont they come from chicken?)
I have became allergic to milk products since I started DMSA , I think which is causing an autoimmune response to it with the mercury)
Neem also cleans the blood and help with my digestion. Im studying Ayurveda because of how this Tree had inspired me . I will be rid of candida forever this time becasue I have a docotor that knows what he i s doing and helping get the metal out. The most important factor of this is my daily infrared sauna. Rememebr when you started chelating the candida can get worse as it did for me for about a week. I kicked Donna to the curb and found this diet. http://www.knowthecause.com nuts and raw dairy on it if you can tolerate it. Nuts are a fat and protien which DO not feed candida. I have eaten almond butter every day, which please tell me what it the difference between an almond butter and and almond that you have chewed?? Why would Almond butter feed canidda. BED is a macrobitoc APPROACH to this , the the only solution, i found out macro is not for
    me.

I'm encouraged by people who bend the “rules” so glad to see that you find eating fish okay. pH balance is something I was totally unaware of 3 months ago but now I find it fascinating. You talk about adding foods back to your diet but how long did you spend transitioning into your pH balanced diet?

But this looks like it will be alright :)

  • 26 bueller // May 27, 2009 at 1:12 pm

It took 3 months for the cravings for carbs to end and about 6 months to start holding a good pH balance and a year before I stopped needing to monitor daily and got used to just knowing when things were off.

Everyone is different but that is what happened to me.

    Best

Hi, very interesting information and thank you for sharing. Do have a ? for you that am sure you can answer. When mentioning fish, it's mentioned in one part that you do eat it 1-3 times a week and then later in the article that you don't eat it. I read through it a couple time and may still be missing something so thought I would ask. Am going to order the PH strips today, my understanding is that is where it all starts (correct?). Your resources are excellant, I have looked at most of the sites so far and apparently the green drink you spoke of is only available in California, I didn't see any other states listed there. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it is greatly appreciated.

  • 30 tj93jl58 // Jul 4, 2009 at 6:53 am

Hi ~ Thanks so much for sharing you knowledge; tremendously interesting and sounds like you put alot of time and energy into your research. Have a question for you about the fish, in one part you indicate that you eat it 1-3 times a week and in another part, you indicate that you don't eat it. Maybe I'm not reading it right, if you could just explain that for me so I understand. Am going to order my PH strips today because sounds like that's where it all starts. I see that California is the only state listed for the green drink, I am from Wisconsin, do you know if this is available from other states? Otherwise, I can check that out more myself. Thanks again for giving of your time and knowledge, no doubt many people on here are learning and growing in your gift.

Hi, I am 40 years old and was diagnosed with cervical cancer stage 1b. I have been on a semi strict diet, mostly alkaline, with losts of organic fruits and vegetables, and have also been eating apricot seeds, and maple syrop and baking soda, as well as wheatgrass and many other organics. I also have bought a water filter, which I swear by and have gotten 2 other friends to purchase it, I have tested both the tap water 6.4 with a ph litmus paper and my filtered water is at 8. I too, also believe in an alkaline diet and have noticed a drastic change in my health, I feel better now than when I was told I had cancer, I am not afraid of the disease, however I am due for a hysterectomy in 5 days and am going to get a second opinion before I take the plunge for the surgery. I know I can defeat this disease, especially knowing how I feel, of course I don't drink or smoke, it is so important to eliminate all the toxins from your body, as well as metals etc.,so that you allow your system a healthy recovery in curing your body from this disease. Thanks for this site, it is a huge relief knowing there are others out there who are going through the same thing, and to all the people that do take this on naturally, my hat goes off to all of you, God bless you all.

  • 32 heavenliest // Jul 19, 2009 at 9:44 pm

I am 40 years old and was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Since the news, I have been on a semi strict diet. Consisting of lots of organic fruits and vegetables. I take bee propolis which helps with the immune system. I eat mung beans and apricot seeds, and even a mixture of baking soda and maple syrup. I also have purchased a filter which makes the water alkaline, I even have gone so far as testing the tap water to that of the filtered, tap water being 6.4 and the filtered water an 8. That is a huge leap. Alkaline diet is so beneficial for this disease. I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy in 5 days. But I am going for a second opinion just before. I have never felt this good in my life. When I was diagnosed, I did not feel back then, what I feel now. Thank you for this site, it is very informative. I can't stress enough, the role diet plays in healing.

  • 33 alex // Aug 21, 2009 at 12:04 am

I've only recently discovered the importance of alkaline meals. Thank you for this list. I think I have a pretty good diet right now, but could use a few of the pointers here.

  • 34 heavenliest // Aug 21, 2009 at 9:37 am

Hi Alex, a good website for you would be, genuinehealth.com. This I found with my litmus paper[to read ph of water, urine and saliva.] It will give you a list of fruits and vegetables, and indicates how alkaline or acidic they are. Please, please invest in a good water filter, go to santevia.com. I swear by this, it eliminates all the toxins as well as fluoride and chlorine. It truly is alkaline and will help you get on the right track. Oh, my doctor let me know 2 weeks ago that the cancer is gone, apparently the stage 1b cancer wasn't even there the day before my surgery. All that was left was the pre cancer that was removed. So good for you in your discovery and keep reading Alex, there is so much to know, but it is truly rewarding.

  • 35 alex // Aug 22, 2009 at 1:18 am

    Hi Heavenliest,
Wow, I'm really glad to hear that you are back on the right track and the cancer has vanished… best of luck to you, and thank you for sharing those websites. I will definitely check them out.
